Olkhon Island

When we arrived in Irkutsk me and Sia split up. I went to a hostel while Sia went to a luxury hotel and after maybe three hours I got a text message from her saying she gave up and was flying to Thailand the next day. Well well, travelling in Siberia is not for the faint-hearted:-).

So the next day I took a minibus to Olkhon Island in the Baikal. Continue reading

On the train for 77 hours

There it was: The Transsiberian train. Very long, blue and to be true, nothing speciel to look at! We boarded it and found our compartment, very small and we had to share it with a Russian couple. They knew how it worked so they showed us the luggage storage under the seat and we managed to fit it all in. Sia took the top-bunk and I looked at my bottombunk, 40 cm wide, and wondered how many times I would fall out during the night. Then our “sleep-friend” started to make his bed and he knew how to make the bed bigger and more comfortable. Continue reading

Moscow

Arrived in Moscow, had some problems with the letters so I got off at the wrong metro station and walked around for almost 40 minutes before I realised my mistake. Finally I got the hang of the metro system and found my pre-booked room and Sia, my travel companion arrived just after me. It was a funny place called Galinas Flat, a private home on fifth floor where she had a double room and a dorm with five beds where we slept. The kitchen was very small and well not the cleanest I have seen but it was allright and the shower was nice and warm so I found the place ok. Continue reading

Off she went!

Not many of us can actually go on these “Ttravels with Karin”. At least not every time. Or at the very least not further than to the airport.

But that we did. Followed her to the airport to see her safely off.

I think we did well!

On the road again

Today is the Day

Today is the day

Finally I’m on my way to Moscow.

After 6 weeks of preparing I think I’m ready. I decided to get my own visas instead of letting the travel agency handle it which I regretted a lot as hour after hour passed by in buses on my way to and from embassies, surfing the internet for informations, going back after the things I forgot and so on. Finally on wednesday I received my passport with all my visas and I finished packing, unpacking and re-packing!

I prefer to travel light but that is close to impossible when you are going from minus 20 to plus 40 degrees, from maybe 5000 m above sea level to 40 m under, through 4 countries and 6 time zones.

I will meet Sia, my friend and travel companion, in Moscow later today where she is arriving from Egypt where she has just spent one month in Dahab, lucky her!

Our schedule:

3rd of Nov arrive in Moscow

8th of Nov depart Moscow at 23.25 on train # 10

12th of Nov arrive in Irkutsk at 9.16

19th of Nov depart Irkutsk at 05.43 on train # 6

20th of Nov arrive in Ulan Bator at 07.30

25th of Nov depart Ulan Bator at 08.05 on train # 4

26th of Nov arrive in Beijing at 14.31

We have one week in Irkutsk where the plan is to go to Lake Baikal. I wanted to go on a dog sleigh but it seems that that area is the only place in Siberia where the temperature is above 0 degrees… So we will see what happens on the train and then make plans as we go…

In Ulan Bator we have 5 days and there I wanted to go to the Gobi desert but that is the only area on the way where the temperature reach 20 degrees below 0… So again we will decide what to do when we are actually there!

In Beijing we will do the tourist-tour with the Great Wall, the Forbidden city, the Peking duck, the Olympic city and so on. You know: Please follow my umbrella and on your right you have a very famous monument and blablabla… When we have seen enough of Beijing we go to Xi-an by bus, train or plane, we haven’t decided yet, depends on the price and time. In Xi-an we will see the Terracotta-soldiers and maybe climbed the Hua Shan (I think that was the name of the mountain there) and watch the sun rise. After that we might go to the Yangtze River and sail through the three gorges before they are flooded in 2009 when the big dam is finished. Then we might go to Guilin to go on another boat trip. The 10th of Dec we fly to Borneo where we will end up in Semporna with the Scuba Junkies where I have arranged to do my dive master course.

Nice plan, right? Well, I’ll be back later hopefully with some great stories from the trip!

The Trans Mongolian Railway

Next trip is planned: The Trans Siberian Railway through Russia, Mongolia and China. So strictly speaking it is the Trans Mongolian Railway!

Travellers: Me and my friend Sia

The schedule is: 8th of November departure from Moscow and after four days on the train we arrive in Irkutsk where we will spend seven days exploring Lake Baikal and the surroundings, going on a dog sledge trip if the weather is permitting and otherwise see what fortune will bring. After a week in Irkutsk we continue to Ulaanbataar, capital of Mongolia, where we will spend five days. I want to see the Gobi desert but otherwise again we let chance lead us. The 26th of November we will arrive in Beijing.

Dahab

Dahab is one of my favourite places in the world. First time I was there was in February 2002. I came back on a one-month vacation in June 2003 and during that I decided to stay. The first three months or so I did nothing, not even diving because I was afraid to go down. So I snorkelled, read a lot of books and got a nice tan! After a while I had had enough of the Egyptian food, especially the bread, so I started baking my own bread and it became very popular amongst my friends and one of them suggested I opened a Danish bakery. After a little while I decided to do so and me and my Egyptian boyfriend started looking for a nice place. It was not easy because Egyptian standards did NOT match my demands and when they finally did the owner knew his worth and wanted way to much money. After some weeks we agreed on a price with the owner of a place called Salam Camp. The kitchen was a mess and there was no oven but we started removing walls, build-in tables, asked a carpenter to make a nice railing, by chance we found a perfect and very cheap oven, painted and cleaned everything and I made the menu. We decided to have a big opening on the 21st of December 2003 with a buffet so people could taste my products. Some English friends promised to do their fireshow for free and we made flyers and posters. to be continued
